One of many -- is that meeting the gap for basic needs is a lot better than what happens when those needs are met.
Basic Healthcare vs. Serious Treatment
The price of meeting the gap vs. housing a prisoner per year....
Even decent Republicans in Utah have some of this figured out. In all places, in Utah - I'm not sure if it's governmental or private --- but the cost of housing the homeless is cheaper than when they become an actual burden on society.
$25,000 for the entire family of three a year - to bridge the gap so they can be productive and healthy.....
Versus all the trips to the hospital on Medicaid..
Versus the price if one of the kids or both turn bad.... Prison costs the tax payer $30,000 a year EACH...or MORE.
We can keep going. It's actually better to invest in those who struggle the most -- than pony up the cost later. Maybe the hard costs of those who are 'problematic' in society will go way down.
But then again --- let's just keep shitting on them, judging them..labeling them......and enjoy paying that higher cost to build more prisons and the high costs of the legal system and the healthcare system....because we want to discard them like trash.
When you ban books before you ban guns, you've admitted that you're more afraid of children learning than you are of children dying.
