Aggressive social distancing measures became wishful thinking early Wednesday when more than 100 public school parents and students stood in long lines and bunched together outside the Board of Education building as they picked up education packets, Chromebooks and meals — part of the school district's remote-learning contingencies.
Parents fumed as they were compelled to wait 20 to 30 minutes to receive the provisions, offered to accommodate learning and ease the blow to families hit hard by the state-mandated shutdown of schools, part of efforts to slow the spread of the disease.
"They had more than enough time to prepare for this, and yet they didn't take enough precautions to prevent this scenario," said Krysten Summey, who was picking up books for her fourth and first graders. "Now we're standing next to each other, shoulder to shoulder. This is a health hazard."
