The first step is attendance, which I think most reasonable minds would agree, is the responsibility of the parent(s) or guardian(s) of the student.
Had a look at the most recent scorecard and on the first page is a simple breakdown, showing the following:
District %: 30.7
State %. : 16.8
Amongst white students, the chronic absenteeism rate is 26.8% for the district and 13.2% for the state.
Conclusion: white parents in GC allow their children to not attend school at more than double the state average.
Amongst African American students, chronic absenteeism in the district is 49.7%. Twenty two points worse than the state average or 27.4%.
37% of students in the district have an IEP (individual education program) due to learning disability or some other malady.
With only 16% of adult GC residents having obtained a bachelors degree or better, a litany of truants and special needs students, itís not shocking test scores arenít great.
Step one to learning in school is to go to school.
However, it doesnít appear to effect the small core of intelligent people GC turns out every year.
