As Circus wrote in his reply, there are safety issues with that wiring. However, that's the way BMC wired their electric fuel pumps in the 1960s.
If you decide to pursue an electric pump, makes sure to buy a low pressure one, mount it low, preferably NOT in the engine bay, and put a translucent pre-filter between the pump and tank. Metal case filters work but you cannot visually tell when they are loading up.
