Years ago I was helping a friend tune the Volvo he bought while we were in college. He yanked all the plug wires off the dizzy before I could stop him. He didn't know the firing order or have a service manual. We guessed at the order and got it wrong. When he cranked the engine over to start there was a massive backfire through the intake. The car's large flexible, corrugated rubber intake snorkel blew into pieces. He flipped out since his parents were coming to town the next day and there was not chance of getting a replacement part. I wrapped the snorkel with Saran and then wrapped over the Saran with at least two rolls of vinyl electrical tape. To an untrained eye it looked factory. The repair ended up staying on the car for months and was never noticed by his parents.
Again, plastic wrap can work wonders.
