I just got done installing the oil seals. It appears to be working. I don't see smoke anymore. Ford pinto 2.0 oil seal is the one that fits. Cheap repair. $8 for a set. II hope it last.

: Oscar a "positive" type seal
: will fit snugly on the stem & guide
: top.
: There are also "umbrella"
: type, which fit snug on the stem and
: ride along with the valve, they are not
: used often anymore, and several types
: of O-rings, which are not real seals,
: they just deflect oil away from running
: down the stem.
: I would leak it down, compression
: check, and pull the rocker assembly
: & do a cam lift check to make sure
: you still have an engine.
: Then use air or string method, or both,
: and pull a couple springs and do a
: "wobble test" on a couple of
: the inlets and see what you have to
: work with. On a street engine with
: stock (weak) springs, oftentimes you
: can manipulate the valve by hand, with
: the spring fitted, and lever it gently
: with a flat tool from side to side to
: check for obvious excessive clearance
: It takes a little extra time to do the
: checks but it could save you from
: pissing up the proverbial rope if there
: are problems other than the stem seals
: or lack thereof...

: The Pinto valve oil seals arrived
: yesterday. I am not sure how that would
: prevent the oil from getting sucked
: down the combustion chamber when the
: oil seal seems to be too loose. (Oil
: could sip through it I think). Maybe if
: I can find an O ring to fit inside the
: oil seal, that might be the solution.
: Oh well, it might be time for a
: complete head job. I am not looking
: forward to that job with the head
: sticking to the block. Its a pain to
: get them separated.

: Thanks Glen. So does the smoking could
: probably be caused by oil sipping
: through the rings?
: I used to go to a British Car Show near
: Annapolis Maryland. They always had
: lots of Triumphs and MGs. Too bad that
: ended.

: Oscar sorry I'm late to the party, big
: Sebring Vintage weekend. No Spits. No
: GT-6s. 2 TR-3s and a TR-4 represented
: the marque well though.
: Re oil smoking, if it's getting sucked
: down the guides, it will normally be
: most noticeable under closed-throttle
: (high manifold vacuum) ie during heavy
: engine braking, rings will be under
: acceleration.
: The engine will benefit from having
: positive type seals fitted, provided
: that the guides/stems aren't badly
: worn.

: I found the oil seals on eBay. As the
: other forum said, the oil seals for a
: Pinto 2.0 should fit. Cost $8. Free
: shipping We shall see.

: Thanks for the response. I read on a
: forum of a Pinto oil seal that would
: fit. I think I will try that first
: rather than taking the head off. After
: my car idles at the light and I
: accelerate, there is a little bit of
: smoke at the start so hopefully it is
: coming from the intake valves.

: On my GT6 and Spitfire I don't believe
: Triumph installed any valve stem seals.
: There may be some that fit but you
: will also need to make sure that when
: the valve is open at max lift the seal
: is not hit by the valve keeper.
:
: Valve guide seals are not typically
: necessary on the exhaust valves.

: Thanks Doug. Next question, is there an
: oil seal that would fit and stay in
: place? I read on another forum where it
: was done with success.
