The trick to loosening the retainer/keepers/stem end is to use a short length of tubing or a socket on top of the retainer, with an ID larger than the diameter of the outside of the keepers, so that it fits on top of the retainer only, and give it a smack with a hammer. It has to be a good sharp hit, it's the sudden shock load that does it, but be careful not to hit it too hard or the keepers will sometimes pop out, but it nearly always loosens it up enough that the air will hold it up.
Sometimes belt & suspenders is the safe way to do something...

: I have never been able to use the
: compressed air to hold the valves up
: when I remove valve keepers. They have
: typically been stuck together too long
: so attempting to compress the spring
: only broke the seal seating the valve
: allowing the air to leak out. I use
: rope down the spark plug hole instead.

: BTW I use the
: compressed-air-in-the-cylinder @ TDC
: method when I remove springs for
: whatever reason with the head fitted.
: Good luck!
