Depending on the gasket you're using, it may or may not need sealer. Most modern gaskets have a shiny surface and look like they have a coat of clear-coat on them; exactly what it is, a sealer that melts and bonds when the engine gets hot, no additional required.
Copper or copper-clad gaskets may need sealer.
The oil hole in the gasket should have a sealing ring embossed in it, it won't hurt to put a light smear of good sealer around the hole, for "feel-good" but if the sealing surfaces are good, and the gasket has a sealer on it, it shouldn't need any more.
Also re-torquing is critical, in spite of what some say...
