If you use a regular bolt with an o-ring you stand a good chance of the o-ring slipping out and/or getting crushed out by over-zealous tightening. However, you could use a regular bolt and Dowty Seal (Google for images). Or you could fit an aftermarket sump plug and drain washer and stay low profile. Easier still would be to use a brass internal hex pipe plug (like would be used on oil galleys). That would be my preference. Incidentally... on Honda cars they took that one step further. Their transaxle drain plugs have a square internal hole sized to fit directly onto a 3/8" drive ratchet. It's wonderfully simple.
