Well it sucked!
Point is that there is a lot to it, a lot of which I don't fully comprehend, but it's best to stick with stock specs. The change +/- is largely at higher speeds than a stock street engine will ever see, and is very dependent on the rest of the system ie carbs, head, intake & exhaust.
A couple degrees advance for chain stretch is enough, especially with a single-row chain.

: Thanks Glen. The 110 figure you
: calculated matches what I came up with
: both by calculation and on a couple of
: web sites. I am comfortable going
: forward.
:
: I am curious why the last builder set
: the timing closer to 108 degrees. If
: you figure some drift for chain stretch
: the last person probably set the cam
: for 106 or 107 degrees. I have read
: that setting the cam timing
: "forward" a bit is supposed
: to improve low end torque but I'd be
: afraid to try a change like that on my
: own without someone telling me ahead of
: time what the downside of advanced cam
: timing would be.
:
: Thanks again,

: OK belay the engine number comment, I
: have many books... looked up the
: CORRECT spec for US smog-spec.
: in open 18 BTDC
: in close 58 ABDC
: ex open 58 BBDC
: ec close 18 ATDC
:
: comes out to 110 LC
:
: checking clearance .040
:
: Is this what you need?
:
: You can also double-check after it's
: set via the "overlap #4
: method" which I have posted here
: and would be glad to post again.

: Sorry, I don't know which book you are
: referring to.
:
: This 1500 engine is serial number:
: FM13363OUCE
: The engine was transplanted into our
: car in 2010. I picked it up from a
: friend who was unsure of the engine's
: history.
:
: In 2010 I had a couple of acquaintances
: look up the serial number and they said
: it suggests the engine is from 1978.
:
: Thanks for any guidance you can offer.
