If it isn't sealed well, the oil can migrate around the sides and leak below the engine plate.
If it's a crankcase leak, sometimes you can find the leak by cleaning everything and running it at a high idle with all of the crankcase vents temporarily plugged so that it builds up a little pressure.
Of course you can also use a LITTLE bit of shop air to do the same, and spray a little soapy water around suspect areas.

: You may remember that I only recently
: rebuilt the engine in our GT6.
: Obviously all the seals and gaskets are
: new. Much to my annoyance, we have
: developed a small oil leak from
: somewhere on/around the timing cover.
:
: I have re-checked that all the timing
: cover bolts are tight. I suspect that
: for some reason the shaft seal itself
: is leaking just a tiny bit. Being new,
: I doubt there is damage to the seal and
: I don't remember seeing any damage on
: the shaft spacer that goes between the
: timing gear and the harmonic balancer.
:
: I am hoping to make the seal stop
: leaking by installing a speedi-sleeve
: on the shaft spacer (since it it the
: spacer that contacts the shaft seal)
: and putting some gasket sealant on the
: joint between the front of the spacer
: and the harmonic balancer.
:
: If you have other suggestions for
: things to try and places to look for
: the leak I will be happy to hear them.
