We took the car to a show yesterday and my wife was very pleased to get a 2nd place in a mixed class including TR7/8, Spitfire, GT6, and Stag. The gear reduction starter proved to be important as she stalled the car twice while the engine was cold. Apart from that the engine (and starter) behaved well apart from a leak that developed from either the front seal or timing cover flange.
So for the starter motor update... one month and still happy.

: Good point. I do have a basic 6 into 1
: header to be installed. I don't think
: it would be as much of a potential
: problem as would a 6-2-1 or 6-3-1 set
: (with much more "creative"
: plumbing). However, it is still
: something to address. Luckily, the the
: drive train will be installed onto the
: chasis before the tub is attached, so
: there'll be plenty of room for
: "tweaking" (anyone got a
: sledge hammer - lol)

: I don't think the starter I bought is
: 100% equivalent to the Isuzu starter.
: It is my understanding from the
: A-series world that if you use the
: Isuzu starter you need to elongate the
: bolt holes in the starter mounting
: flange so they line up with the holes
: used normally for the Lucas starter. I
: didn't have to do that.
:
: Regardless, when you are ready to
: install your starter I suggest you do
: what Paul did on his web site (and I
: did also) measuring all the distances
: between the extended pinion gear and
: starter flange and the depth of the
: ring gear behind the rear engine plate.
: You will know pretty quickly if you
: need to thin the spacer or otherwise
: modify the mount. Fortunately I have a
: small mill at home and had the
: modification done in minutes.
:
: The other caveat concerns your exhaust
: system. I understand that all the
: vendors make compatibility statements
: assuming you have stock exhaust in
: place. If your exhaust includes a
: header or is otherwise customized
: "all bets are off".
:
: So far the gear reduction starter has
: been great. My wife wasn't thrilled
: when I was putting a non-original part
: on her car but after she went to start
: the car for the first time she loves
: it.

: Hi Doug,
:
: I bought the equivalent Izuzu starter
: (used) for chump-change based on the
: info at Tegler's link here.

:
: My main interest in the installation is
: the detail on milling down the spacer.
: Of course, my engine is still in boxes
: and baggies, but I'm really looking
: forward to a little extra cranking
: oomph (especially with the compression
: tweaked up a bit.
