Problems come from working it too hard and/or not changing the fluid regularly. Hard shifts, "dumping" the clutch, and extreme engine braking are tough on the them; this will break hard parts ie gears, mainshaft spigot. It's also easy to "beat the syncros", and every time it "graunches", it makes little pieces of metal which cause wear to everything, especially the needle/roller bearings.
Treat it as being a little fragile, and change the fluid regularly, and it will do what it is supposed to do...

: Glen I kind of knew you would say that.
: The car is for my son and he is an
: original parts freek. I doubt he will
: abuse the car. I have a line on some of
: the parts I need so I will just keep
: looking. Thanks very much for any
: advice. I have a TR6 with overdrive but
: never been in the gearbox. Shifts very
: nice and I am so glad it has overdrive.

: Any conversion is going to take some
: effort & $$. There is nothing
: inherently wrong with the Spit/GT-6
: box, it just wasn't designed to take
: power/torque, and the 6 cylinder puts
: it at the limit; it's marginally
: adequate if you work it hard. It is
: getting hard to find decent used hard
: parts but the stuff is still out there
: if you look for it.
: I have never had any decent results
: bushing the mainshaft spigot. I have
: successfully repaired that, if the tip
: of the shaft isn't worn too bad, ie
: dimensionally OK. It involves an inner
: race which is a slip fit on the
: mainshaft (requires loctite), and a
: caged needle bearing which requires
: that the 1st motion be machined out to
: proper size to fit. This works very
: well but the inner race OD is just a
: few thou larger than the ID of the 3-4
: sync hub, so the loctited race has to
: be removed when the box is stripped
: down.
: I may be able to find part ##s, I have
: done a few boxes like this but it has
: been awhile, I do mainly the big TR
: boxes.
: Also when you are sourcing parts, there
: is an early & late GT-6 box.

: Don't misunderstand me I want to keep
: the
: GT6 trans but have already run up
: against a new parts wall. First/second
: gear very hard to find. Mine is pretty
: chewed up. The connection between the
: main shaft and the input shaft both are
: a little scored. The old roller bearing
: is quite loose. Ok to use a bronze
: bushing like the did in earlier cars to
: reduce the steel to steel wear on parts
: now very hard to find?

: The TR6 box in a GT6 is a common
: conversion for the racers but slightly
: more difficult in a street car. The
: rear NHV mount requires some clever
: fabrication for a street car while the
: in the racer it is ignored.
: Additionally, the TR gearset SUCKS for
: the GT6 and thusly requires the $600
: close ratio gearset from Ken
: Gillanders.
:
: Do fit the box You need the engine
: backing plate from a TR and an extended
: pilot bushing to engage more of the
: input shaft. The clutch slave can be
: mounted using the 2.5 Saloon mount or
: fabbed at home.

: Guess I am a throwback and date myself
: but.....I have most of the Triumph
: tools for gbx repairs and
: inspect/rebuild very carefully every
: one I do. I treat each one like it is a
: race car transmission.....Haven't had
: problems...knock on wood. Everyone has
: opinions, just voicing mine.

: The few TR6 gearboxes I have seen are
: quite a bit larger than the 3-rain and
: single-rail boxes. I imagine a lot of
: tweaking and fabricating would be
: required to make a TR6 gearbox fit. I
: expect a new tunnel cover would be
: required and that it would encroach a
: lot into the cabin.

: Sorry for bit of confusion, my car is a
: Mark 3 GT6. Transmission has had a hard
: life. Suzuki in Bugeye looked great fun
: but any alternate trans would have to
: be adapted by someonelse. I can
: assemble but I can't design. Thought
: about a TR6 trans but you never hear of
: anyone doing it so there must be some
: problem.
