One of my favorites on the Pawcatuck River, this paddle is mostly flatwater with some quickwater and one set of Class II rapids in Carolina. The put in is on Railroad St. in the village of Shannock, just below the former (removed) Lower Shannock Dam. We'll take out at Cronan Fishing access on Rte 91. This is not a long trip...a little under 4 miles.
Wet suits or dry suits are strongly recommended since the water is still quite cold, but at a minimum you must have a dry set of clothes to change into in a dry bag. The trip is suitable for beginners to advanced beginners, but be aware that we do need to navigate one long (about a quarter mile) Class II rapid that, while straightforward, can be a challenge for beginners or anyone with no experience in moving water.
We should be off the river close to lunch, but be sure to pack at least a lunch or snack.
Meet at the put-in at 9:30. Vehicle shuttle will leave promptly at 10:00 to shuttle cars to the take-out.
