AMC Narragansett at 2022 Save The Bay Swim- Kayak and SUP Safety Squad Paddle
Saturday, August 6, 7AM-10AM
Attention, experienced Kayakers and SUPers- please join AMC Narragansett Chapter as we help Save The Bay's Annual Swim and celebrate our mutual vision of a healthy, and accessible Bay for everyone. This is a unique paddling opportunity that experienced AMC paddlers (kayak or SUP) can do as a group. We will rendezvous in Jamestown (Potter Cove near Taylor Point) at water's edge by 7:00AM, paddle the 1.7 miles crossing to Newport, and return to the Jamestown side escorting swimmers. We will park on the Jamestown side at a designated lot. There is a drop-off area for boats and boards. Total time approximately 3 hours.
The Save The Bay Safety Squad is a group of trained and experienced kayakers and stand-up paddleboarders who act as an additional safety layer around swimmers and kayakers. Safety Squad members watch for swimmers who may need assistance and serve as extra eyes on the water. We have a group of dedicated volunteers who join the squad every year and are always looking for more to join the team! Requirements: Must be a very experienced and seasoned kayaker or stand-up paddleboarder. Must be 18+ Must provide your own kayak/board and safety equipment (flotation, etc.). Attend the on-water safety training briefing.
Requirements are:
Register with Save The Bay as a Safety Squad Member- Please fill out and sign the safety squad waiver, which will serve as your confirmation that you will volunteer for the Swim. Use your full legal name. Use the following link: See https://form.123formbuilder.com/6124817/2022.
Once you confirm with the completed waiver, Save The Bay will register you as a safety squad member in the volunteer portal.
All SUP/kayakers will put in on the Jamestown side. Since the swim begins at 8:10 am, you need to be in the water no later than 7:45 am for the briefing. Required equipment for Safety Kayakers: Sea-worthy 9.5' (minimum) sea kayak or sit-on-top kayak with a paddle (No tandem kayaks permitted) 1 life jacket/personal flotation device
Strongly Recommended Equipment: Paddle float and pump (if there is a cockpit) Spray skirt (if there is a cockpit) Paddle leash (or other means of attaching paddle) Water Bottles Whistle/signaling device
Inclement Weather Plan: The swim goes on rain or shine. The only reason the swim would be cancelled would be for fog or unsafe nautical conditions if that should happen the decision will be made that morning. Please check your messages before you leave home to volunteer.
