I have not had any issues with dolls from recent years (say 10 years or so). I have had many 1st generation integrity doll bodies yellowing and the neck breaking. I have also had Barbie bodies with legs that got really sticky and silkstone heads that got oily. I wipe down the oily silkstone heads with alcohol and that helps a lot. I have since rebodied any doll with body problems. Also, I want articulation, so whenever I can, I give my dolls new articulated bodies or bodies with better articulation. |
Plastics and vinyl have pasticisers or polymer molecules that may change over time and while plastics do not biodegrade, they change characters and can discolor or become brittle or get oily or change in some other unpredictable way. Plastic lasts forever but it may not retain its shape or color forever.
Also, many vinyl doll outfits disintegrate in the same way. I have a beautiful faux leather jacket for an action figure that had the "faux leather" crack and peel off. While it is sad, it is not surprising to me as this has happened quite a few times before, and there is nothing one can do to prevent it. Now, I think twice before buying "faux leather" outfits for my dolls.
