I didn't try to restrain its movement at all. I did set the figure where I thought I'd get a fair shot. He only pulled into his shell once when he thought I was going to hit his its head. I didn't. Probably could've picked it up and posed it. He'd have pulled into his shell then, gaining me a bit more posing time. BUT, I wanted to minimize his irritation at my presence.
