we weren't about to spend $ on costumes that would only be worn once..most of the outfits were hit and miss..you had to stretch your imagination to see what it was supposed to be, unless there was a talented mom who could sew well, and had the time to spend..this was the era of the baby boomers..a couple of my friends had 5 kids each, i had 4..all just 18 months apart...busy busy times, but very creative..i remember it was very hectic trying to get everyone ready to go out...but fun, lots of excitement and fun...going back even further when i was about 6/7 middle of the depression, costumes were even more sketchy, and when you went to a house, you had to go in and perform in order to earn the candy (and give the grown ups some much needed entertainment!)..i learned a little poem just used on that night.."the cat sat on the wall, and that's all!" it was a good one, very short, but still a poem so they would give you the candy, and you would get out of there quick, and on to the next..we were very serious about getting as much loot as possible..candy didn't come around every day....
