There are lots of ways to get them to stand up, some pretty sophisticated and some (like mine) really simple. I use a couple small clips to fasten the backdrop to a piece of poster board that I prop up against a wall or piece of furniture. I've seen a setup that uses a pair of lab stands with clamps to hold a rod to suspend the backdrop. The only drawback with backdrops is you don't have much leeway to take shots at an angle. I keep my backdrops rolled up and stored in large mailing tubes, but if I had the room, I'd store them hanging flat.
