Yesterday we took part in an annual Spanish tradition… it was cold, it was wet and the line snaked four blocks but it felt like everyone and their grandmas do it so like good old residents, we too got in line… “ El Gordo" (Spanish for "The Fat One") is the popular nickname for the Spanish Christmas Lottery (Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad), which is considered the largest lottery in the world in terms of its total prize pool. It is a massive national and cultural event in Spain that marks the unofficial start of the Christmas season. The draw takes place every year on the morning of December 22nd and has been a continuous tradition since 1812. The entire event, which can last over three hours, is broadcast live on Spanish television and radio, captivating the nation. For most Spaniards, the lottery is about hope, sharing, and a sense of community during the holidays, rather than just becoming an instant millionaire. “
