1. I don't buy any doll I don't love. No "she's kind of cute", or "she would look good with...", or "I like her hair" type of purchases. I have to really want her. This goes for lotteries too, just because there is one, doesn't mean I have to participate. Even if I see a doll I think I love, I don't just rush & buy her, I wait as long as I can & think about how I really feel about her. Very often I decide that I can be happy looking at other people's photos of their doll, & I don't need to buy her myself.
2. I don't buy any doll that I plan on changing. I see people saying how they're going to buy a certain doll & get her rerooted all the time, & I don't get it. If I don't love the way she comes (excluding clothes), then I'm not going to work out ways to make myself love her.
3. Admit when I no longer love a doll & sell her. It happens, something I adored no longer does anything for me, so why keep her. Also, admit when your taste changes. It took me buying & then selling a few Poppy Parkers & a Misaki before I realized that even though they appeal to me at first glance, I don't really like dolls with long, fluffy, blonde hair. So now I know not to buy them to begin with.
4. The redressing list. This was a lot of work, but worth it for me. I created an excel workbook for my dolls. I gave each doll type a page & listed them all alphabetically with the name they came with (things like "Dreadfully Cute Misaki" or "19AW Ruruko") & the one I gave them. Then I created a random list of all the dolls I redress & started redressing in that order. When I redress them, I cross them off of the list & put their name on a new list for the next round of redressing. That way all my dolls get played with, & no doll gets accidentally left in the same outfit for years (unless I want it to), & at that time I can decide if I still love the doll, & also do any repair work she might need.
Sorry for such a long winded post, and I don't know if this helps you or not, but for me, once I started following these "rules", I started enjoying my dolls more & never feel overwhelmed by my collection.
