It's not always what we do that gets us in trouble. Sometimes it's what we do not do that is sin. For example, Paul instructs us not to lie but speak the truth. You may not lie but did you say what needed to be said? James tells us to be "doers of the word and not only hearers." It's failing to do or live out the "word" that counts against us. Often it is easier to follow rules than to follow Jesus. The rules tell us what not to do, Jesus tells us what to do. Loving others, hating evil, doing good, helping the poor and broken, sharing the gospel, living righteously - this is what we have been called to do. We know it; do we do it? Today, ask God to help you to do what you know you should do.
Father, thank you for your word. Help me to do it, not just read it. In Jesus' name, amen.
