You are talking about a man who married a young and
beautiful woman but decided he didn't fancy her when he saw undressed.
With more justification, he complained about the construction of the Monsal viaduct,writing: "The valley is gone, and the gods with it; and now, every fool in Buxton can be at Bakewell in half-an-hour, and every fool in Bakewell at Buxton; which you think a lucrative process of exchange, you Fools everywhere!" . Some might consider it ironic that the bridge is now viewed as one of the highlights of Monsal Dale. Besides, I'd have you know we sent all the fools in Buxton to Bakewll long ago.
Ruskin didn't approve of mountaineers, describing alpinists as climbing or sliding on "greasy poles", so god knows what he would have made of sports climbing!
Other than that, a very sound chap, no doubt but plenty to argue with.
