How would YOU improve this board?

Posted by Strega on July 8, 2014, 12:10 pm

In the next week or two I may become the site administrator here, as opposed to just a moderator, and at that point I will have more control over site content. I may impose registration at that point, time will tell - and I want to make it so the IP of posters is not visible since at least one person who would otherwise come here does not because of said IPs. I do not know what options I will have once I am the admin, but I am hopeful I will have more than I do now.

Now, this site isn't very heavily traveled and at this point is almost a legacy site for old fogies or people that hear about it at conventions. A combination of the loss of the Big Gulp archive, which was the main site to which this was a discussion forum, the departure of artists from this board due to a lack of comment on their posts, and various other events have caused this board to wither to what is arguably a shadow of its former self. The lack of original content means it is mostly used to discuss vore finds on other sites or set up get togethers at conventions.

What could be done to improve the board? What would YOU do to improve the board? Let's keep it civil and not name names, I already know we have a gadfly or two stirring things up.

Make it so we can ignore some people's posts x3 That'd be just great, they could post all what they want in their little bubble while nobody in the world would ever care!

Believe it or not, a mature person really can simply ignore comments of people they may not like, simply by not reading them. That way, everyone else can enjoy, and even lern something from the comments instead of childiishly try to force people off the site simply because they don't like them, or their comments. On 'adult' forums people are allowed to exercise their freedom of speech and critque the art and literature that is submitted for review. Of course, there are some people who cannot tolerate any sort of critisism, and ban or block anyone whose comments are anything but abject praise. This seems to be the real problem.... most people who are 'in' to cartoon animals eating each other are too immature to function on a forum that allows the free exchange of ideas.

Yes, an ignore feature would be nice.

The biggest problem with what I would do is cost. Because honestly, I'd take the whole thing and put it on some kind of site or server where you'd have better gate-keeping ability to permanently ban troublemakers that don't actually contribute rather than being forced to just constantly delete their toxic posts.

Anything like that costs money in some way, and it's money that people don't or can't really contribute for one reason or another. If people knew they could come here and have vore discussions and announce new material, etc. without seeing the malformed posts of a few childish narcissists, they might return to this classic old board. So it might be worth it, but only if someone can afford it or can wrangle the donations.

That and if you can get a board that can keep out the couple self-appointed judges that assume only their preferences are valid, then you could try to encourage certain specific topical discussions. Review threads, discussions on craft that are moderated, that kind of thing.

And much as I hate to say it because of my fond memories of Big Gulp, even if those changes happen it might be a case of everything having its time. Like you've said, the board has been overshadowed by grander sites, and the braying jackasses are just enough to make people not want to come back around to this forum in that light.

Still, if changes are to be made, that's my opinion on what might work.

Well you are correct about the money, How ever in order to do that then you are going to have to have someone you have a lot of trust in to run it cause you are going to need some one with a lot skill to run stiff like that and anyone that can is most likely not going to be cheap, I tried twice to set up a vps and I could not even get passed the setup page let alone run one, and as far as keeping me out
will not happen, and even if by some miracle it did so big whoop I simply have other people post for me...

I am afraid that is a very sensible statement. Snake's letting Strega "always have his way", is what caused (nearly) everyone to leave in the first place.
If Snake would have stood up to him, and let him leave, this would STILL be the great site it once was, with new art and strories being posted daily.

You really don't get it, do you? The root problem here is that many much bigger and better vore sites exist now. This little board was once an offshoot of what at the time was a major vore site. That vore site is gone along with nearly all the old ones because they have been replace by Furaffinity, E621, SoFurry, Eka's and so on. It's hard to keep a Model T running when everyone else has Ferraris, you just can't get the parts.

Methen is a cancer but he is only one small reason this board is sick. It is old and tired and underpopulated simply because people have moved on to bigger things. Eka's is fifty times the size of the old Big Gulp archive and FA is bigger than that.

You are responsible for as many people leaving this board as Methen is. Your self-righteous insistance that only you know what vore should be about and Snake's unwillingness to send you packing chased quite a few board regulars away.

You've been better behaved lately (for the most part) and so I invited you back. Unfortunately you are backsliding toward shaking your tiny fist at everything that moves. This makes you frankly a joke in the vore community, which I see at conventions, but since you have useful information there is also a sense of sadness that you can't control yourself. I keep hoping you will grow up. You are an adult and a professional and you should be better than this.

Now, as for moderators, this board used to have three or four and right now it's just me. If and when I take over the site entirely I will add some more mods. There are a few holdovers from the middle days of the board who are still here enough and are probably willing to take a few minutes to moderate.

How about all para role playing crap,or grammar nazis, guy lying about their gender, or how The Pretenders and Furry's have totally taken over the vore community,or guys turning girls off of vore by wanting to do scat in role plays,or how people reject other peoples characters for the most dumbest of reasons,or how nothing but stuck up sluts and whores with no regards what so ever for other peoples feeling have taken over, See those are your real cancers Strega, For it is those things that have change the vore community, for the worse and until those things are remove then the community will never change...

As one of the true old-timers here, I know I'm wasting my breath/time/patience/electricity responding to anything you and that other yobbo, DC, spout on this board, but...

I don't know why, but it amuses me to no end that you think somehow, paragraph RP is hurting the vore community. I mean, granted, of course it's bad for YOU, seeing as you seem to have trouble with English. Just the thought that somehow, you think that more detail is HURTING the vore community just tickles me.

I like the board. I don't visit it as often as I did in the past, but, I like to check in on it once in a while. It might not be the super busy, but I don't think it has to be in order for it to be a good board.

As one of those old fogies and artists I know how under-frequented this site is. It'd be sad to see it go the way of Voravision, Voretex, and even Avon's old site but this dead horse is still being poked at. TBH the only reason I still come here is to see what new finds someone has found browsing youtube or some other site, but honestly nothing else. I used to post art, but I don't even get maybe 5 comments tops on FA or any other site I post to and even less here so Ive given up on posting art here period. Its a sad truth but unless the site is completely overhauled to measure up to the other art, forum, repository sites out there that have vore as their main theme, much less the megasites like Furaffinity, SoFurry, or Inkbunny, I think a dump of old posts and allow just a repository of the golden days of Big Gulp continue to show what used to be here rahter than the husk that remains.

The site seems fine to me. Nice little vore message board. If you have to impose registration, do what you have to do. I still check back here often because this is where a lot of, as you said, the older vore populace hangs out, and thus I've seen content here that other vore sites overlook.

Site's fine. Just a few troublemakers.

Registration would be good. Maybe you could resurrect the Big Gulp site itself in some way?

Possibly. The trouble is, the time for such sites has long passed - between FurAffinity and its fetish categorization, and Eka's Portal for more human-oriented vore, there's almost a bottomless vein of vore art to tap. Big Gulp was around when there was no large source of vore art - just a few sites displaying the small number of pieces they had access to like precious diamonds. Updating was grinding work and updates were very rare. It was a site built for a different time. Once the big auto-updating sites came online, the little ones melted away within a couple of years - AFAIK, none survive today.

If one of the Big Sites were suddenly to go out of business, though, then there certainly may be room to revive a new Big Gulp. It just wouldn't be the same site.

Re: How would YOU improve this board?

Posted by Terastas on July 8, 2014, 9:45 pm, in reply to "Re: How would YOU improve this board?"

True, but the fact that FurAffinity is such a huge website hasn't discouraged the creation and/or continued existence of other websites like InkBunny and Weasyl. Mostly because FurAffinity is not without its critics, many of whom boycott it completely. Throw in everyone who has decided their content could use a "second home" just in case something goes awry with FA for them in turn and the alt. websites are doing just fine.

Big Gulp could just as easily become a similar second home for the many artists for whom Eka's Portal. It'll be a long time before it becomes just as active, but I'm sure plenty of users would like to have that "second home" website they could sign up at just in case the Portal ever becomes compromised or unwelcoming to them.

Good point, but remember that the REAL reason artists left this site in the first place is because Snake banned the work of certain artists (and I am not talking about me), and this is what really caused the mass exodus that turned Big Gulp into the 'desert' it is today. And instead of 'learning' from this mistake, Strega seems ready to carry on this tradition by his threats to ban anyone now, who does not agree with him.

I'm going to try to ignore the obvious trolling this time and just state, for the record, that Eka is not doing herself many favors either.

Fair enough. When I started out, Big Gulp. VoreTex and Vor-Com were the big names, and they all dried up years ago. I couldn't think of any way to revitalize the board myself, which is why I created this thread. Well, other than getting rid of Methen anyway. 83

Let's try to be honest. I was there. I know the truth. Big Gulp was as 'big' as it ever was until Snake started banning people's art, and you forced Snake to ban one of the sites biggest contributors. It was after those two things, that Big Gulp effectively "dried up".

In Snake's favor, some of the art he banned was created simply to get a 'reaction' from me, but in truth, this harmless little feud brought Big Gulp BIG attention, and more visitors than it ever had before.... until you forced Snake to ban me by you threatening to leave if he didn't.

I would wager that if you gave your word to never ban me no matter what I said, the interesting and insightful discussions that would again ensue would make this a vibrant and popular place again.
