The difference is that one person doesn't spend their time, effort, etc. on making the air and oceans. Whereas an author spends hours and energy creating this fiction people want to read. And we're not in the before time when everyone brought what they could no matter what because there was hardly anything available. There are so many people out there now that produce neither art nor stories, that just enjoy the work others put in but talk about how everything should be free, as if the creator's time is value-less.
Also, authors get the shaft in the "communal" ideology. We can't really do sketch streams, and full-length commissions are actually often a money-loser for us in terms of time spent vs. earnings. However, small unit sales are a way of actually seeing a return and justifying hours spent on kink writing, especially over time if everyone who wants to read that particular piece chips in their buck or two.
So no, unless there's some kind of artist government stipend that I don't know about, art and stories are not a communal resource like the ocean, they are a product. For a time, creators willingly gave that product away to build community when everyone created what they could, but that time is passing. It's why I support the artists I can on Patreon and why I now use Smashwords, while occasionally posting shorter stuff for free. Because we don't live in the era of community-building anymore, and I can't buy groceries with positive comments. And with X writing/editing hours per day in my life, I can't justify spending many of them on writing kink material unless there's some level of return. Otherwise, they all need to be spent on writing mainstream, salable stuff. That's the reality I've had to evolve to in my life. And it's one that a lot of artistic creators will come to as well. Probably a bunch already have, given the number of creators we see just drop off the map. They haven't stopped creating, they're just doing it somewhere that knows the value of their time.

: I am not a big fan of having to pay for a
: story. To me it all should be public domain
: unless it was a commision. Kind of like
: charging for the ocean water I swim in, or
