Supposedly a whale's throat is so narrow that even a basketball would cause it to choke. But in addition to these two vids, there are plenty more examples of whales breaching close to humans, swimming alongside humans, or even purposely interacting with humans.
So what I'd say is happening is that whales are getting more and more used to seeing humans, to the point where now their reaction to seeing one is "Yeah, yeah, just fish around them."
Don't think a whale would ever try to eat a human (supposedly even a basketball would be too much for them to swallow), but I wouldn't be surprised if whales got so comfortable around humans that maybe some of the younger ones start to think it might be fun to make friends and/or screw around with them.
