Not that unusual, believe it or not. I've heard many tales from horse people of horses going after and eating ducklings, young goslings, and other small birds, and they digest 'em fine.

I suspect the real reason is along the lines of deer eating birds: they're trying to get at the minerals in the bones and blood, not the meat. Deer are quite infamous for this, and it seems horses will happily do the same.
