Re: Princess Beatrix' first tiara appearance
The story of the peacock motif parure occurred three years later in 1959 at Beatrix's 21th birthday. After the incident the laurel wreath tiara of Beatrix was considered not to be compatible with that impressive ruby parure Irene had received from queen Wilhelmina. Especially in view of the upcoming state visit by the Shah of Iran. So, according to the Duke of Baena who is the source of this story Beatrix received a beautiful parure of diamonds from her mother one week later, which we know as Queen Emma's diamond tiara.
I guess the laurel wreath tiara has always been considered as a piece for a junior royal. Could it be that it was not available yet at the time of the gala in February 1956 and of the state banquet for Grand Duchess Charlotte? This remains a puzzle. But then the tiara of four ears of wheat which was Irene's first tiara could have been an alternative. Was this considered too small for a crown princess?
