My Mother always said your birthday was a special day that belonged to only you. We always acknowledged birthdays, had a quiet celebration or dinner, but quietly did that every birthday.

When I married, I was surprised when every birthday was a wild celebration to the point of ridiculousness. It was so excessive and overdone.
