I do genealogy and throughout the ages, I've seen horror stories...little ones left and new mamas raise them. My Aunt Lacy went to a private nursing facility. They didn't make sure the placenta was gone and she died of peritonitis a few days later.
Her young husband took the older daughter and left the baby girl with my grand-parents to raise. He eventually had more children, but that baby girl grew into a beauty, and went wild. She died in Texas when she was 69. But her two children were left in an orphanage where they were molested and raped. She'd left one beau and left them with him. He left them at the orphanage without a look back.
Yes, it's truly sad when the little ones are left behind.

My Paternal Grandma was Susan Cordelia Scharf. She was the one who raised a grand-daughter...and she out-lived her husband by 17 years.
