As a child I had the measles, mumps, German measles and chicken pox. The vaccines for those were not yet developed and there were epidemics of all of those. Thankfully I never got polio. I did get the vaccines for polio when they came out.
The sickest I have ever been was when I had a ruptured appendix at 17. I was in a coma for a couple of days and the doctors weren't sure I would make it out alive. My parents said that I received the Last Rites at that time - a sacrament given to those approaching death.
