It may or may not be chicken feed. I live not far from HM's Washington pad (I'm on the cheaper side of the river!) and that is an extraordinary piece of property. At least it can be justified in that he bought it when the Crown Prince was a student at Georgetown and the King visits Washington regularly anyway. He used to stay at the Georgetown Four Seasons when in town. It's next to one of my favorite bookstores and it is always a hassle when a Head of State is staying there. Many have Washington homes (good insurance in case of revolution).
The Malibu property, though, is very hard to justify as anything other than Louis & Marie Antoinette (or Muhammad Reza & Farah) level extravagance. It's three adjacent properties on one of the most expensive streets in the USA. It's nickname is Billionaire's Row.
As for the London property, its extravagance when added to the other two seems like a bit much.
Another factor is that Jordan receives billions every year in US assistance, behind only Israel and the late Republic of Afghanistan in American largesse. This isn't going to look good to the American public either.

Probably hasn't done anything illegal and undoubtedly chicken-feed compared to his richer Middle Eastern peers but, in a poor country like Jordan, coupled with the recent political scandals involving close members of his own family, I suspect these kind of revelations are not exactly going to enhance his popularity.
