It appears that the Queen's family is of high status and has interacted with the King's extended family (i.e. the Queen's mother is the goddaughter of one of the King's uncles). However, I think the intermarrying has come as a result of the union of the present King and Queen.

Yes, that is right. Also, a few years ago, the Queen's sister married a brother of the King. Very interesting.
