: I brought up the caliphate because it is my
: understanding that at the time of Ataturk's
: abolition of the monarchy, there was a sort
: of implication that the caliphate would
: remain in the person of the head of the
: House of Osman. Obviously, this did not pan
: out because the caliphate itself was
: subsequently abolished. But if anyone knows
: of any alternative method for choosing a
: hypothetical next caliph that was put
: forward between the two abolitions, I would
: be interested to know it. I do know that the
: Nizam of Hyderabad toyed with assuming that
: mantle in the 1930s-40s.

Scholars at the al-Ashar University in Egypt summoned a meeting in 1924 in order to elect a new Caliph. Their plan was to have the King of Egypt elected. But before that, the King of Hijaz was proclaimed Caliph. However, in the same year, the Kingdom of Hijaz was defeated by Abd al-Aziz ibn Saud (the King to be of Saudi-Arabia) and the King of Hijaz was forced into exile. At the end of the day, no Caliph was selected.
