Is North Korea a monarchy?

As a matter of definition, I'm not sure quite what to make of these "republican" regimes like in North Korea or Syria. In the case of North Korea, the "supreme leadership" has now passed in hereditary succession from grandfather to father to son. At what point does that have to be considered monarchy? Or is monarchy v. republic simply a matter of what title the leader of a state happens to use?
