The federation is called The United Arab Emirates, but actually no one of the rulers has got the title Emir. They are all called Sheikh.
Before it was an area with f.in in 1970 some only had a couple of thousand inhabitants.Abu Dhabi area covers the major part of the country. Then you have the sheikhdom of Dubai, which is actually an area, which seperated itself from Abu Dhabi and founded the city of Dubai. For a long time the sheikhdom of Dubai actually only was the city and had only some villages elsewhere.
Then you also had the al-Qasimi dynasty, which ruled a principality, which was f.i. in 1800 still very powerfull and in fact the major power then.
Later it was divided inth the principalities of Sharjah and Ras al-Khaimah and later also for a while Kalba, which was merged with Sharjah again in the 1950-ies.
Umm al_Qaiwain and Ajman were little areas(espacially Ajman)with for a long time only a coupkle of 1000 inhabitants. Now it has each several 10.000 ends.
Fujairhan was before an area of the al-Qasimi realm, but became from begin 1900 more and more independent.Ca. 1950 I think totally.Look on internet for it.Fujairah is the only sate which lies on the e-coast.
Before I was much interested in the area, but now it is only a very miodern country(espacially Sharjah,Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the original way of live is hard to find.
A bit funny, that they call now the rulers of Ajman and Umm al-Qaiwan His Highness and even His Royal Highness.
Before it was known as the strange stamps country, because apart from Dubai and Abu Dhabi;the other sates, who had little to non oil sold all kind of prints, which was described as stamps.Even of their dependent areas.
Before Abu Dhabi(Sheikh Zayed)and Dubai(Sheikh Rashid)had very good rulers.
Umm al-Qaiwan is indeed a very beautifull sheikhdom.
Most of the people in UAE come from India and the like.
Yours sincerelly:
