Joinville Pomare, who has headed the Royalist party since about 2003 has been campaigning for some sort of official status. His latest proposal was for something similar to the situation in New Zealand with the Maori Kingi movement. The head of the movement, and thus the head of those tribes that belong to the confederation, has a certain official recognition and status. He/she is commonly called the Maori King or Queen.

He has also used the example of Uvea, a French territory where the local Kings are recognised and actually exercise some power.

However, all attempts at trying to find how he is descended from the Pomare dynasty or who what his line of descent is, achieves no result.

He has had some public relations successes, partly due to the farcial teritorial elections and the election disputes concerning Gaston Flosse. He was also able to arrange a large gathering of Pacific Royalties, to which representatives from all over the Pacific went. Virtually all sent the highest ranking people possible. The French authorities first tried to have the meeting stopped, claiming that the uncertain political situation made the gathering unsuitable. However, they had to relent when the Maori King and the King of Tonga said they would attend. So ultimately all the officials had to giv in and then even turned up with garlands and presents.

Of course, the family relationships are quite complicated. Lots of illegitimate offspring, some officially recognised by their parents and others not. However, some of these unrecognised offspring have been legally adopted and recognised as full heirs by other members of the family. So in one sense their status is better than that of the recognised illegitimate children.
