Chances

Hello all

I am a recent graduate with a degree in Biochemistry BS
I have a overall GPA of 3.32 and a science GPA 3.27
MCAT: 500
Clinical volunteering which serves people with no health insurance and with direct patient contact roughly 250 hours

Worked in healthcare as an MA for 2 years
Have shadowed orthopedic surgery, primary care, urgent care, and electrophysiology cardio surgery.

I an wondering if people can let me know what they think my chances are for admission and which schools would be worth applying to. I am a hispanic male.

Please let me know what you think my chances would be. I am very new to these programs and would like to know experiences people have had with admission.

MCAT is good, GPA is competitive for some programs, most notably, Nova, as they list 3.2 competitive. The higher the better, obviously. Your experience is great, but definitely make sure you get your anesthesia shadowing, they won't consider you a candidate if you don't. I was just accepted to nova with a 3.2, 157 verbal and 159 quant, with 20 hours anesthesia shadowing and 100+ total shadowing. I also had over 100+ hours volunteering with hospice. I think you should fare well as an applicant, just make sure to finish up everything quickly and apply soon. I was told to apply by november to best be competitive, but I applied in July, earliest possible.

Nope! Nova has a very relaxed, friendly interview. Ask you pretty general questions just to get to know you. More like a conversation, nothing to be nervous over.

sorry but i have a quick question on the nova application. For the letter or recommendation, is it asking for me to have someone actually write a letter or fill out the pdf evaluation form on the website? Sorry I'm just kinda confused because I thought it was an actual letter.

You need both done. When you ask someone to write you a letter, ask for your email and add that in CASAA, and hand them the PDF printed out, with an envelope and stamp

Recommendations only have to be filled out in CASAA. Whoever you decide to ask will receive an email with instructions .

Have you shadowed any anesthetists?

Have you started on your CASAA application?

Do you have all three rec letters ready?

These are a few questions that need to be answered. If you are applying to Nova, you should get all of these done soon and send it ASAP.

Based on your stats alone, you seem to have a good shot. Just makes sure everything else is stellar.

So I have not shadowed an anesthetist yet and I did start my application but I'm debating on holding off depending on if I can get all my shadowing done in time and get my letters of rec on time. It shouldn't be a problem to do these things and get them in on time.

Assuming I do all these things, what programs do you think I would be a good fit for? or do most people just apply to all programs?

So the CASAA application tells you the deadline for all of the programs. I only know Nova since that's where I'm applying.

Just do your research about each program and you'll know which one best fits you.

But first, shadow an anesthetist and see if you even like the career.

So you don’t think I should retake the MCAT? Or improve the GPA?

I’ve heard these programs are competitive so I’m just debating if there is any adjusting of my statistics prior to submitting

Your MCAT score is good and is competitive . Your GPA is a little on the lower side but your experience should make up for it . I suggest that you apply to Nova , Case, and Wisconsin.

I think you have a better chance of getting an interview at those schools based on my experience. South looks for highly competitive applicants with higher gpas and the deadline for Emory is this week. You could also try Indiana

Yes both the Nova programs have the most seats with the Ft Lauderdale campus having the most. I would recommend getting your application in by mid November to have a good shot. Most of the other schools have class sizes between 12-20
