Recently I've been introduced to the AA career and programs. Spending hours of internet searching and reading about it have made me very interested. I have been having troubles finding a shadowing experience (funny enough it's been nearly impossible even though I work at Mayo clinic). My question is even though all the programs accept applications until Feb. Are your chances lowered significantly? Im expecting my applications to be in before the year ends but I'm trying to decide if it's just best to save my money and wait until next year. Thanks!
How is it so hard to find shadowing time? Just contact any anesthesia department and ask if they can help you out. No doubt there are providers that love to teach and would take you on for the day. Good luck.
Finding time isn't the problem. I have been contacting multiple people who eventually lead to dead ends. It's been surprisingly frustrating. For most people it doesn't seem to be a problem but it has for me.
Also the typical "do I have good chances": V-154 Q-156 W-4. GRE. And then GPA 3.8. Currently in clinical research at Mayo clinic. My weakness is I'll most likely have the minimum of 8 hours shadowing experience. Is that something I should try and increase? Thanks!
If you don't have an issue financially and can deal with the stress of a relatively intense/time-consuming application, why not apply? It's true, there may be programs with a less than ideal amount of seats open at that time. But people also decline offers of acceptance all the time and I'm sure some others will withdraw after paying the deposit to attend another program. It certainly can't hurt to apply if you put in the effort to produce a quality application. A side note: I would make sure to shadow before you get too far into your application to make sure this is something you'd love to do for the rest of your life.
Your GRE scores are good, and your GPA is excellent. I got 4 interviews with no healthcare experience but 2.5 years of research in the dept of anesthesiology, GPA 3.65, MCAT 510. Good luck!
Great advice! Also this is exactly what I have been thinking. Shadow then fill out the application. It's a lot of work and not worth doing if I don't like the career. Thank you for your response and good luck to you as well!
