Hi, I'm a cytotechnologist who has worked in my field for 16 years. Recently, I changed jobs and was working at Mayo Clinic with CRNAs in different settings. Working alongside the Anesthesia care team has really picked my interest in the field. I need advice on acceptance into a program, when your GPA isn't great but you have a great GRE score and work experience. What is the best approach? Thanks in advance!

Hi, I believe you have to take all of the prerequisites within 5 years of applying to AA programs. If you need to retake them, then it could be your chance to improve your GPA. Some schools allow you to take prereqs at community colleges. From my experience, Emory and South seem the most selective. I would apply to all of the AA programs to improve your odds of getting in. You can apply to all of them through CASAA.
Just out of curiosity, may I ask why you are interested in becoming an AA? I was interested in becoming a cytotechnologist for a little while in college but never got around to shadowing anyone.

I love Cytology. However, unless your working in a hospital setting, you're not working directly with patients. I'm at a point in my life where I'm looking for significance. I want to serve more. I would love to travel back to Africa and render my services. Also, I work with CRNAs and I love their passion. They ALL love their job.

The best approach is to apply. Most programs like to have well rounded students and since you have changed careers or are thinking about it, it puts you at an advantage due to years of experience. Just apply and see what happens. Plus programs give feedback on how to improve your chances of getting into their program. You can always give them a call and see what information/advice they can provide. Good luck!
