What are my chances of getting into Emory's Anesthesiology Assistant Program?

I am currently a high school math teacher. However, I would like to go into the medical field and Anesthesia has always been something I have been interested in. I would like to complete the program at Emory, however, everything I have read states that it is almost impossible to get in. So I wanted to get an idea of my chances before I begin working on the 5 prereq courses I would need to even apply.

My undergraduate is in Secondary Math Education. I took all the same courses as a math major except for one. My overall GPA was 3.6.

My graduate degree is in Instructional Technology and my GPA was 3.9.

I have taken the GRE and my scores were 500 for verbal and 760 for quantitative. It has been almost 5 years since I have taken it, so I know I will need to take it again. However, I did not study at all the first time, so I know I can increase my scores.

I do very well in Math and Science classes. I took Chemistry 1 and 2 and Anatomy and Physiology in college and made A's in all, so I am confident that I can make A's in all of the other classes that I need to take before applying.

Do I have any chance of being excepted, or am I kidding myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I honestly think your chances are good. Emory has plenty of students with little or no clinical background, strengths not necessarily reflected on their transcript alone, students changing careers or getting a late start on their education, as well as those with strong clinical and academic backgrounds. If you are in the Atlanta area, I would schedule an in-person meeting with the admissions director to discuss your competitiveness as an applicant against recent trends. If possible, do early decision. I was told by a staff member before I applied that almost everyone who applies early at least gets an interview. Also, the one thing I would highly recommend is coming up with a really solid explanation of why you want to be an AA. Not just "it's something that always interested me." Why this, why now, why not another similar job, what is your inspiration and driving force for choosing this program at this school? You can use this to create a strong personal statement for your application, and if you get an interview (arguably the most important part of your application), you will almost certainly be asked this question.

Just FYI, I applied 2 years ago with a 2.81 GPA and was accepted to both Emory and Nova. 25 year old caucasian male, 1320 GRE, and no health care experience. You never know until you apply.

Just based on grades, I think you would have a good shot, theoretically. It also depends on how well you interview of course. I think if you get As and Bs in the 5 courses, you would be alright. That's only my opinion, though. I would try to avoid the online classes.

It's kinda hard to give you an answer. You'd have to take the courses, retake the exam, and then we'd know if you have a chance. Everyone has a chance when they haven't even taken the pre-reqs yet. Organic and biochem is a little different than gen chem and anatomy, so don't be overconfident that you can get straight A's. Start taking the classes, and apply while you are doing so to save time, and then you'll have a shot. And Emory isn't impossible to get into - they accept all types, just like every other program. If you are seriously interested then you should also apply to the other programs to increase the chances of getting into this field.

Thanks for the advice. I would like to apply to the other programs, but I know I will not be able to move. My husband is in a job he loves here and has been in it for a while. Do you know if there are any places that I can take online classes for the prerequisites?

I think the only one they may accept (I'd confirm first) is the university of New England. You'd probably be better off dong it in person though, it looks better. In 2nd year of the program, u do have to travel for a few away rotations.

Can you choose your out of town clinical site? Northeast GA is on the list, which is not too far for me.

I STRONGLY recommend you reconsider your choice to maintain residence in GA while doing this program. I am currently in an AA program in FL and I LOVE it. You'll absolutely LOVE it. There is an ex-teacher in our class and she is amazing in this program. Being away from your husband would only be for 15 months, and then you do a year in clinicals. There are plenty of places to do clinicals in GA. Additionally, 15 months isnt really long in the whole spectrum of things, considering you will start making 6 figures as soon as you graduate. I really URGE you to look at the newer programs as they are more lenient on your completion times for classes, probably. I would look at Quinnipiac's program and UC-Denver. Just from my experience, I know I am in a lot of debt already, but I am so grateful to be in a program and really cant say anything bad about the profession.

I would love to apply to all the schools. I definitely would not mind moving, but I also have a 2 year old son. Im not willing to spend anywhere near that amount of time away from him. Maybe more programs will open up in the future. Right now I must focus on Emory.
