Working in the midwest

For any of you who might be working or doing rotations in the Midwest right now I have a question. It seems like AA's do more regional anesthesia in the Midwest hospitals than in Georgia. Is that the case? And if that is the case and a person would like to work in the Midwest someday how important is it for them to attend a program that teaches regional anesthesia? Is that something that employers are going to look at that would make or break a hiring decision between two candidates?

programs will do some regional training...the basics. However, most of it is done on the job. i.e. Your rotation site will teach you on human subjects. Not a make or break, because you can be taught at that hospital. Just try to get your hands in on any blocks during rotation sites so you can tell your potential employer that you've done X amount regionals. Cheers

You will do zero regional at Emory despite what the program director thinks. If you are lucky you will do OB somewhere that lets you do some spinals.

Where did you happen to hear that? Did you happen to shadow and see that? Cause I can't speak for just one hospital but...
Ohio is one of the best states for AAs and trust me they are not just doing regional there. St. Louis is also a great place for jobs now. Your education at any school will not just focus on regional, that is really only a tiny part of what AAs do.

I'm sorry, I was not implying that AA's only did regional in the Midwest or that it was a majority of their work. I just meant that they did more regional work than some hospitals and areas in the south. I was including Ohio in my generalization of the Midwest too.

Basically I just wanted to know if I was going to lose out on jobs in the Midwest if I chose a program or clinical rotations that didn't teach regional

You'll be fine, like the other poster said it is not a make or break. A lot of it is on the job training.
