How many applicants are interviewed during Emory's early application period?

I am debating whether to apply to Emory during their early application period or wait and improve my stats (which will take several months). Does anyone know how many applicants are usually invited to interview during the early interview sessions? Also, how many early interview sessions does Emory usually hold?

I read on another thread here that Emory is no longer going to give second consideration during the regular application period to applicants who were rejected during the early period, so I really want to time this well. I would be more than happy to ask Emory's admissions staff these questions, but it seems like provoking an email or phone response from them is harder than pulling teeth.

They do not always have an early applicant pool. It depends on how many people apply. From what I understood at the interview for my year, they invited around 80 early interviewers for 20 early spots. I think they decided to do early interviews if they can invite around those numbers to fill half the spots in the class. Emory usually holds group interviews (3-4 applicants per group), 3-4 interviews per day over 4-5 days.

I have no idea if there is a new take on second consideration, but my experience or advice from others has always been apply early could only help.

linh's info matches what i was told when i asked when i was applying to emory. apply ealry way better chances of getting in, and if u dont u know what the interviews are like elsewhere, though emory has the worst interview of any grad/med school i have ever been too. almost rude.

Can you elaborate on what makes Emory's interview so unpleasant? What kinds of questions do they ask? Do they start out with "Tell us about yourself" like the other programs?

I can understand why some people would say Emory's interview was unpleasant. They purposefully make it a very high pressure, intimidating atmosphere to see how you respond. Whatever opinion you take, they try really hard to make you doubt yourself and change your mind. Honestly, they just want to see that you have some backbone in you.

Honestly, I think I would rather participate in an interview where I'm barraged with "tough" questions such as those Emory is alleged to ask rather than an interview marked by casual, open-ended questions where I have to talk extensively about myself. I interviewed at Nova last year, and I really hate answering statements like "Tell me about yourself." I would rather just answer questions where you give a brief answer on a position you hold, what you'd do in a particular scenario, etc. Just out of curiosity, can anyone give a few examples of the questions Emory asks during the interview? Do they still ask you about casual aspects such as your hobbies, work, and the dreaded "Tell me about yourself?" LOL.

Honestly if the Emory interview was that "tough" to you, then you are in the wrong profession. Yes, it's true they ask open ended/vague questions because they want you to think analytically and under pressure.

There is always one person who is designated as "bad cop" and will antagonize you and make you try to second guess yourself....Some sample questions from my interview:

To me (I was a chem major): What is the definition of a calorie?

Other people: What % of the atmosphere is oxygen? Guy doesn't know so they tell him 21%. Then they ask, ok so what % of the atmosphere is oxygen on top of Mt. Everest? Trick question...same % just less of it.

Some question about $1 billion in healthcare money being allocated equally to all 50 states, so how much does each state get?

If a Jehovah's witness patient is bleeding out on the table do you give them blood products?

Anyway, you get the idea.

Interesting... do you know how not knowing the answer to a question influences their opinion of you as a candidate? Or is the way you do or don't answer it what matters to them?

Also, since you are interviewed side-by-side with another candidate (I think?), do they ask you each the same question and assess how well each of you answer it? In other words, is the interview competitive?

I think it's interesting to note that at Nova's interview, I wasn't asked a single pre-planned question other than "Tell me about yourself" (which isn't really a question, but whatever). I think I would rather "play the game" and participate in an Emory-style interview where I answer more specific, individualized questions.

Do you recall if Emory even asks the usual questions about hobbies, work, personal characteristics, etc.?

And for the heck of it, I would be curious to hear about any of the other wacky kinds of questions Emory asks if you don't mind. :-)

I interviewed with 4 other people in front of 5 people which included three people from the program, one anesthetist, and one attending. We were all asked different questions and there were many of the generic interview type questions.

Describe a situation where you used teamwork, what are your interests outside of this program blah blah...Can't remember any other weird questions at this time. One of the interviewers flipped over his name card and asked the girl in front of him what his name was.

She acted all panicky and flustered about it...probably didn't help.

My "tough" question was about the Jehovah witness patient. You can find most of the questions Emory has ever asked by searching the forum. As far as quirky questions. My interview with two other people just involved, "What are your hobbies?" "How was your shadowing experience?" Stuff like that, which you can also find searching the forum.

i got like 3 ethics questions about Jehovah witness patients and blood products. i was interviewed in feb with one other person. were tons of typical medical school questions about science biology ecct. no personal questions. nothing about me or my life. if u answer any question wrong (science/bio, ethics is debatable) which i didnt, but my interview partner did u might be asked if u were sure your school was a four year university and not a community college. thats about as personal as they got.

they were rejected bc i dont think they answered one question right and then cried loudly right after the interview. somewhere on the student doctor forum (a website by that name) there is a list of common medical school interview questions. i winged it for med school interviews and they werent bad but read on here emory was rough, they were right. i studied every question i could. it worked but i think they could tell i studied so they drilled me with ethical questions (which are harder to study for).

people on here might say u should know the answers and i did but studying them makes it easier to say when under pressure. important u understand the concept not the answer they will ask follow up questions to make sure u get it and arent just repeating something u read. it is one of the biggest moments in ur life. its important to be prepared

I went to a diff school. didnt know enjoy their interview or school very much. their lab unless it has been changed is not as nice as the other schools i went to. i really dont like atlanta too. also atlant job market is not great so if u do a lot of rotations there not doing u much good

I checked SDN's site for interview feedback from Emory's medschool interview and it seems like they ask a lot of questions about your personal life, work, what you've done since graduating, etc. It sounds like their medschool has an easier interview than the AA program. What would you say are the toughest questions you were asked during Emory's AA program interview? I really want to be prepared if I get an interview! :-)

if u look back on this site there was a thread (actually several) several times in the last few years. the dozen+ comments are much more than i can provide myself. there is a list on that site of general med school questions. that is the list to look at. i dont think any of the same people are at the aa interview as their med schools so the questions there are not very valuble

while we're on the subject, does emory like to ask interview questions to try and call people out? for example, like asking the candidate what they've been doing for the past year if they have already graduated from college? in this case, would it look bad to say that we've just been working part-time in a non-healthcare job?

yeah. most places will do something like that. if u document what u have been doing tho the questions will b "i see u graduated a few years ago, but u have been reallly busy..." and they will ask specifics not IF u have been doing something, but what. if u havent been doing ne thing the questions will be worst.

you said that if i haven't been doing anything, the questions will be worse. can you elaborate on that? how will they be worse? do you mean that they will ask tougher ethical questions and science questions? or they will ask tougher questions on my background and why i havent been doing anything?

To the original poster "Applicant" -- you might want to wait to apply later in the cycle, depending on how low your stats are. I was informed by Emory this morning that the average GRE score of accepted students last year was 1240, although I don't know if there is actually a cut-off or if they are flexible depending on the applicant's other attributes. I am actually waiting to hear back from Emory on whether or not there actually is a cut-off.

I'm about to graduate from Emory and I have no idea on any of this, as I doubt any of my classmates do. This isn't really the kind of info a program makes public.

Your best bet for a contact is Jerri, good luck hearing back from anyone else.
