Nova Tampa big problems? Why to pick another school
Posted by adyg on May 30, 2011, 10:22 pm
I was not sure if I should post this. But since I am a recently accepted student (to a few schools), I thought I should help future AA students out if I could. After hearing from a friend, I'm glad I chose the school I did and not Tampa. I actually posted before asking about Nova's clinical sites for 1st years- which are really bad compared to other schools.
Here are the main issues compared to other schools 1) Not enough clinicals, they aren't connected with a hospital, so they struggle with getting clinical sites and they dont have enough spots for more than 1 day a week the 1st year. 2) Bad clinicals- 1st yr sites are mainly pediatric traveling dentistry, pain management and surgery centers. I hear none are really teaching institutions, so the students get no real experience except for a few that get into a hospital. But event the hospital docs dont all want students. 3) Hardly any local 2nd yr rotations. Students are expected to be ready to be placed anywhere month to month and pay the travel and lodging costs. I talked to some profs and they all said that that is a really bad way to set up a program and may do harm to the professions rep in the future. Some say that they have heard of no other school or other medical programs that do not have enough clinical spots for their students. Travel and experience outside is good for learning, but programs are obligated to have enough local spots bc that's what students are paying for. I'd be ticked if I'd spent thousands and had to go travel and look bad because my program doesn't have clinical sites. 4) No academic feedback. They wont show you your tests to know what you get wrong and some prof wont review after wards. Again, I'm going to be spending a lot of money and want good feedback (Not all though) 5) Disorganized- Constant schedule changes- my friend says they never their course or clinical schedules, they change or are cancelled all the time.
I know this is going to start a lot of bad talking, but I really want to give others a heads up about what I know. Other Tampa students may have dffrent views. This is just one side, so check things out if you really think you want to apply there. Check out about the other schools, they may have a similar situations, but I have not heard anything like this.

Re: Nova Tampa big problems? Why to pick another school
At the end of your message you stated "I know this is going to start a lot of bad talking"
This was the only true statement I was able to find in the whole message. I'm a Nova AA Student at the Fort Lauderdale program, started clinicals at 6-8 hours 2-3 days a weeks. Not sure where the false information is coming from but please don't paint it as "helping other people" if you want to truly help others verify your information. I'd be happy to answer any question anyone has about the Nova program. I am so happy to be here and love the teaching model that is used at Nova. As for academic feedback - false again, our class has been able to review our exams as well as challenge questions and learn from any mistakes made. The whole program is here to help you succeed and not eliminate you or look down on you! As for constant schedule changes, not sure how you are defining constant. I will not lie there have been some schedule changes, even sometimes when our class asks then to move an exam around to allow us additional time to prepare. They really are student focused and help us out anyway they can! If you are accepted at Nova take pleasure in knowing you will be taught by professors that are concerned and dedicated to your success!
Re: Nova Tampa big problems? Why to pick another school
I can tell you for a fact that all AA schools rotate 2nd year clinical sites around the country. Our professors are Emory, Case, and Nova graduates. They all do this. I know some of the anesthesiologists I've spoken with in other locations, such as Missouri, have students from all the schools rotating with them. It is about getting the best training possible, and we are provided a wonderful opportunity to do that.
If you can't handle schedule changes and remain flexible then anesthesia is not gonna be for you. Anesthesia practice is about adapting to changing situations.
As to 1st year clinical sites, you will learn in proportion to how much effort you put into it. If you sit back and expect to be spoon fed then you won't learn much.
Re: Nova Tampa big problems? Why to pick another school
I'm not sure why you are just bashing the Tampa program because the Ft. Lauderdale campus is run exactly the same. 1.) Your first year you are only at one day a week and so is the Ft. Lauderdale campus then there is a progression to 2 days a week. Please note we are still in school 4-5 days a week still. 2.) The clinical sites are rotated so that each student, before they leave for their senior year will have experience in office, surgery center and hospital settings. 3.) Your clinical sites for senior year are given to you according to what is best for you. There are local sites and you can stay locally if necessary but the program would rather send you to the best pediatric (or whatever specialty) hospital in the country if they can to get you the best experience possible. Ft. Lauderdale has the same protocol! 4.) The whole HPD (health professions divison) of Nova is allowed to show tests to students once they have been turned in. This was implemented after a large scale cheating scam/scandal in one of the other HPD programs. After our tests you are given a sheet with your grade and the topic of each question on the test and whether or not you missed it. 5.) Our schedules are a little last minute but do realize that there has to be a coordination of multiple practicing AA's, MD's and other teachers. We get schedules on a month to month basis. As for cancellations, do realize that our MD's are on call!
Not sure who your friend is but sounds like you or they might be embellishing some...
