There is a lot of anxiety in all healthcare professions about reimbursement under the new health plan (if passed). The reality is that AAs allow for for less expensive care as you stated above; it allows MDAs to oversee 4 patients at once instead of only providing care for one. If the plan passed and if it significantly lowers compensation AAs will only become more prevalent as they are cost effective. You forget that in the majority of states CRNAs are not independent and function with similar supervision as AAs. Also, there has been no precedent of a non-physician provider completely usurping physician care as you suggest with CRNAs. Anesthesiologists will always be in demand by the public and CRNAs will continue to practice independently where MDAs don't want to go. Even in those states where a CRNA may be legally allowed to practice independently hospitals may still institute policy stating that CRNAs must be supervised. The AA profession is growing and will only become more prevalent. I think it is an exciting time to become and AA and watch the profession grow and to be part of a great profession.
