As a medic... Archived Message

I think EMT is a very good background in emergency medicine and interventions. I worked as an EMT, then paramedic, for 8 years before becoming a generalist PA in emergency medicine - then an anesthesia assistant. EMT training helps teach a lot about medicine and basic pathophysiology, emergency interventions, and more. All of this with experience makes for a good candidate, but until you go to paramedic school (another full tough year) you won't get into more advanced procedures (including intubation and ACLS). However, to go into anesthesia I would definitely focus more on grades and anesthesia shadowing. If you just loved fire/EMS like I do, I could see the extra effort helping - and having strong basic skills is a nice thing. But in the time window you looking at you won't gain as much from EMT school as you probably would from focusing on core courses and shadowing. EMT school studying takes time as well, and although clinicals are fun, it's best to not be distracted.
