There's been a lot of talk from the CRNA camp about AAs not be educationally equivalent.

This side-by-side comparison uses the requirements presented for the programs at the following two schools:

    1) Case Western Anesthesiologist Assistant program
    Master’s Program requirements

    Anesthesia Program

    2) University of Maryland Nurse Anesthesia program
    Master’s Program requirements

    http://www.nursing.umaryland.edu/admissions/application2.htm

    Anesthesia Program

    BSN program
    http://www.nursing.umaryland.edu/programs/bsn/bsn-trad2.htm

Note: the nurse anesthesia program only required statistics and a physical assessment course to apply. However, examining the BSN program at the same school I was able to determine which classes were taken prior to nurse anesthesia school.

    Prerequesites AA CRNA
Entrance Exam MCAT none as of 2007
Degree Bachelors Bachelor’s with nursing major
Grades Req B- in all prereqs above 3.0 cumulative
Experience OR shadowing 1 year acute care
    A&P 1 year 1 year
    Biology 1 year
    Microbiology 1 sem
    Pathopharmacology 1 sem
    Chemistry 1 year 1 sem
    Organic Chemistry 1 year
    Biochemistry 1 sem
    Physics 1 year
    Calculus 1 sem only Algebra
    Statistics 1 sem 1 sem
    English 1 sem 1 year

So before getting into a master’s anesthesia program the CRNA has only taken A&P 1+2, microbiology, pathopharmacology, general chemistry 1, algebra, and statistics. How is that possible? Shouldn't they have a few courses that weed out the "bad ones"? Organic was a compete pain to get through.

    Master’s Education AA CRNA
    Length (months) 24 28
    Credit Hours 63 72
Clinical Hours min 2000 not stated
