Totally agree. One must be realistic and always have a back-up plan just in case things don't go as planned.
I didn't get a traditional BS in bio, chem, etc... I got a BS in Respiratory Care. This way I took care of most of the pre-reqs and I received clinical training as a respiratory therapist. I now work at a children's hospital and I'm gaining clinical experience and making a good salary (better than a teacher, starbucks associate, or lab researcher... lol).
If being in the clinical setting is what you desire I would advise you seek a BSN, BSRC, or a BS in CLS. All 3 afford good salaries and clinical knowledge which would help you in AA or medical school.
