If things were not bad enough, the FBI is investigating the clinics and providers for Medicare fraud. Specifically two items are being investigated:
1. Charging for 30 minutes on the procedure time when the procedure was done in less time.
2. Charging for a full 50 cc bottle of Propofol for each of two patients when in fact the bottle was split between them.
This of course would be a federal crime and any arrangements with the state regarding disciplinary action and surrender of licenses would not give immunity from prosecution.
Bottom line, better make sure you do not charge incorrectly.
Charge only for the minutes actually in the room doing the procedure and do not the 10 minutes you spend giving report in PACU.
Also if you use a single patient bottle on one patient and throw it away when done with that patient, you lessen the chances of this kind of "double billing" the vials.
