Yes, DD. If you want to look at it as a MONEY issue. FACT: There is a shortage of anesthesia providers and it is getting worse. FACT: When the AANA started pushing for a masters degree for nurse anesthesia, the programs had to move into a college setting. Many rather than doing that, simply closed down. FACT: When NA programs were simply diploma programs run by hospitals, they would pay the students a subsidy while they went to school, making it much easier for a nurse to give up full time work and go to NA school. FACT: The combination of the AANA and its efforts to require master degrees for all CRNAs and the greatly added expense of going to NA school caused a drop in NAs coming out. It was the AANA and nurse anesthetists who caused this shortage situation and they are not doing enough to fix it. If the ASA and MDAs capitalize on our mistakes that is just too bad. Whining is not going to fix it. If you want a constructive suggestion, how about each and every single Nurse Anesthetist in the nation gives 5% of their salary to nurse anesthesia programs so they once again can subsidize students? That would make it much easier for the schools to crank out more nurse anesthetists and AAs would not be needed at all. Or are you against that too because you do not want the market flooded with nurse anesthetists and you are too tight to spend 5% to save our profession? ( I would not as I have no objections to AAs in the first place.)
